I’m somewhat confident that if Epictetus were to come back to life and look at modern science, especially after Darwin, he wouldn’t make any argument from design.

Maybe, but I speculate there might be another possibility too. Given that Epictetus invoked God so much, he might not have been so eager to jettison divinity. For example, he could have been one of those today who see evolution via natural selection as a means for design, since it's not (only) a random process.
