I was looking for this post, as it resonated a lot with my own experience when I read it a while back. Maybe if I change a few things (e.g. Rome for Buenos Aires), my relationship with Christianity is a lot like yours. My estrangement also began at Confirmation.

However, I still think that Christianity has permeated the Western world with its morality, and I don't necessarily think in a bad way. For a long time I wondered why I found many similarities in certain concepts of Stoic ethics. A while ago I started a Master's in philosophy and decided to dedicate my thesis to investigating that.

The result for me was quite impressive. It's a bit long to summarize here, but while in theological matters there is a strong Platonic influence (especially regarding transcendence), in matters having to do with virtue ethics, where the Stoics had already made enormous progress by the time of Christ's arrival, there has been a clear assimilation by Christianity, which even many Christian thinkers explicitly recognized (just to cite an example, Tertullian already said in the 2nd century AD "Seneca saepe noster", or "Seneca so often ours"). It is incredible to see even the use of properly Stoic terminology in texts such as the Bible, where there are clear allusions to Greek terms very characteristic of Epictetus.

At the end of my thesis I would like to share what I have found with those who are interested in the Stoic community. I don't know if a very large group is the best option. I don't want anyone to feel offended. In any case, the fact that there has been an influence proven by facts and texts does not invalidate the Christian religious position (I believe that it even reinforces it's views on virtue ethics).

If you ever see any interest or opportunity, even for a small group of interested folks, please let me know.

Regards.

My withdrawal from the Roman Catholic religion was finalized with its belief that you cannot enter Heaven unless you accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour (not sure if I worded that totally correctly, but you get the gist). My husband of 44 years is a fine human being. I’ve never met a better person. He’s also a Jew. I’m not going anywhere where he’s not welcome, even after death. Hopefully we’ll end up wherever Mahatma Gandhi is.
